Clogged Drain Clearing

Can Plunging Make a Clog Worse?

Usually it helps. In a few specific situations, it can push the problem further down the line.

Plunging is one of the first things most people try, and for a straightforward fixture clog it's usually the right call. But there are a few situations where plunging can make things worse instead of better.

Pushing a Clog Further Into the Line

A plunger works by forcing pressure through the trap and into the line beyond it. If the clog is soft or loose, that's usually enough to break it apart. But a dense clog can sometimes get pushed further down the pipe instead of breaking up — moving the problem somewhere harder to reach rather than solving it.

Multiple Fixtures Backing Up Together

If more than one drain is backing up at the same time — a tub backing up when the washing machine runs, or multiple fixtures on the same floor acting up together — that usually points to a blockage further down the system, not a simple fixture clog. Plunging one fixture in that situation doesn't address the real problem and can sometimes force wastewater into a different fixture instead.

Chemical Drain Cleaner Already in the Line

If a chemical drain cleaner was used first, plunging afterward can splash that chemical back up and out of the fixture. If a chemical cleaner has already gone down the drain, it's worth calling a plumber rather than plunging on top of it.

Older or Fragile Fixtures

Old, already-weakened seals or connections around a toilet or sink can occasionally be stressed by repeated aggressive plunging, though this is less common than the other two issues above.

When to stop plunging and call instead

If a few solid attempts don't clear it, or more than one fixture is affected, stop plunging and have it looked at — continuing to plunge at that point is more likely to move the clog than fix it.
